Students have been introduced to their science fair projects and given a handout that explains everything they need to do. It is very important that they keep this document for the entire process. I have given them two classes to do some research and decide on what project they are going to do. The first page of the handout was due in class today. The next part will be due in two weeks (February 14 <3 ) and the final project will be due two weeks after that (March 1). Student class presentations will happen during the first week or so of March and the school science fair will be held on March 13. The school fair is not mandatory but students get 5 extra marks to participate in it.
Today we did the foldable as outlined on page 131 in the text book. It needs to be finished for homework and it is due on Monday. This will be used in lieu of a quiz for chapter 4, so it must be passed in. The information for the project can be found in the text book and in the notes. Digital copies of the text and the notes for Chapter 4 can be found in the "Notes and Worksheets" section of this web page - so no excuses! :-) If you don't pass it in on Monday, you will be invited to lunch club on Monday and Tuesday.
Today we start our next unit: Optics. Check out the Notes and Worksheets section over on the left for all the documents for this unit. We watched the video "Bill Nye: Optics" today.
Today, I gave out a worksheet with all the terms that need to be studied for the unit test NEXT WEEK. Most people worked very well on this during class, but very few got it completely finished. Please complete for homework - I don't give much homework, so get this done. Make sure you bring your book next class, because I have something fun planned! :-) If you are missing something from your notes, please check the left side of this page under "GRADE 8 SCIENCE DOCUMENTS." All the power points and note sheets are there.
So we are having our unit 1 test on Tuesday, December 3rd. This unit test will cover chapters 1, 2, and 3. All notes, power points for chapter 3 are posted under "Grade 8 Science Documents" and there is also review for the unit there. Stay tuned, there is another one coming.
We spent some time in class talking about how hurricanes and typhoons develop and we discussed the recent typhoon in the Philippines. The school is doing a fundraiser for the people affected, so our class did some posters to advertise this. Congrats Mitchell! This one is my favourite of all of the submissions.
Due to the Remembrance Day assembly, our Chapter 2 quiz has been postponed until tomorrow.
Today we finished discussing chapter 2. I gave out a review sheet that we treated as a quiz... students worked on it individually to find out what they knew and what they still needed to learn, looked up answers they needed and then I gave out the answer sheet. I will discuss this next class.
The quiz for chapter 2 is set for next Wednesday, March 6. The power point, the note sheets and the review sheets can be found in the handy dandy documents section of this web page over on the left. You can also find a copy of the text book, so if you mistakenly left school, or the country, without your book right before a quiz ... it is only just a few clicks away. Too bad eh?
